With a lead of 55-4, junior Yasmin Gupta makes a free throw in the third quarter.

Despite a lack of players, the girls’ varsity basketball team absolutely dominated Lutheran High School on Jan. 10.

The team stayed in the lead the whole game, but, according to junior Yasmin Gupta, lost its confidence early when sophomore Heidi Johnson sprained her ankle in the first quarter.

I was jumping up to get a rebound and landed on someone’s foot, rolling (mine) to the outside,” Johnson said

She is hoping to be back by Friday, Jan. 13, for the team’s homecoming game against Faith Christian School at 6 p.m at home.

After Johnson’s injury the team had to play four against five until junior Annya Dahmani, who was at the Octagon’s paste-up, changed and arrived at the gym.

Even with this setback, the Cavs never fell behind.

“(We had) really good defense, and (moved) the ball around,” Gupta, the high scorer, said.

Sophomore Bella Mathisen gears herself up to shoot in the third quarter, when the Cavs led 42-4.

“Almost everyone scored.”

Coach Lationia Pitts agreed.

“In the fourth quarter (the Cavs) became very unselfish, trying to make sure that everyone was active,” Pitts said.

Gupta said that the Lutheran team was not very strong, based on their losses to teams that Country Day has beaten. Even so, she said that the team still needs to work on offensive rebounds, as well as following their shots.
