Even though coach David Ancrum was out of town, the boys’ basketball team easily beat El Dorado Adventist, 70-35.
This was the first time the teams faced each other, and by the end of the first quarter, the Cavs were already ahead, 26-3.
Despite being down one coach, junior Reggie Fan said there weren’t any problems.
“It’s a bit different without Ank because he’s usually the main voice in the huddles, but everyone loves (assistant coach) Gary (Brisco) and is comfortable around him,” he said.
Junior Jake Longoria said that the Cavs looked for good shots and made them.
“We were open on the first or second pass every time, but we kept swinging the ball and got a better shot than we would’ve had,” he said.
Senior Jesus Galindo-Sanchez said the boys’ biggest strength was their ball movement.
Longoria agreed, saying the Cavs had good fast breaks.
However, Galindo-Sanchez added that they still must improve their defensive communication.

“There were a couple of times when we didn’t call out some screens, which then resulted in points for the other team,” he said.
Longoria said that they were playing too aggressively, which could have resulted in injuries.
“We needed to slow down the game and take our time,” he said.
Because this was the Cavs’ first time playing El Dorado Adventist, who had just joined the league, Fan said they didn’t know what to expect.
“I just knew we had to play hard, play as a team and rebound well,” he said.
Brisco agreed, saying that teamwork will continue to play an important role in Friday’s game.
“We played good team basketball offensively, but we still need to work as a unit on defense through communication,” Brisco said. “In tonight’s game we need to be more patient on offense and attack the basket.”
The boys’ next game is against Cristo Rey on Friday, Jan. 6, at 7:30 p.m. at Jesuit High School.
