The girls’ soccer team played its first game of the season at home on Dec. 5 against Cornerstone Christian School.

The team won, 3-1, making all three goals during the second half.

“In the first half, we started out slow, and the other team was controlling the game, (but) in the second half, we fell into our groove,” freshman Emma Boersma said.

“That’s when we scored two points, almost one right after the other.”

Their first point was earned after a corner kick from sophomore Lia Kaufman to senior Natalie Brown, who passed it into the goal. The second was another corner kick. Junior Lea Gorny passed to sophomore Abby LaComb, who made the goal. The third goal was also LaComb’s.

According to Boersma, a lot of people, including the boys’ soccer team, turned out to support the team.

Both Boersma and freshman Alyssa Valverde said that considering it was their first game, the team played really well.

“A lot of it was our communication skills and our defense,” Valverde said.

“I know that being the goalie, I didn’t touch the ball that much, which is a good thing. It means the defense was doing their job.”

Valverde said that the team also had really good sportsmanship.

“When they shot the goal on me, right after the ball went in, everybody instantly started to cheer me up and assure me that it was okay,” Valverde said.

LaComb said that the team could improve their passing and possession.

The girls’ second game of the season will be on Friday, Dec. 9, away against Encina High School at 3 p.m.
