Expected to lose badly to Woodland Christian, the JV volleyball girls worked hard on Sept. 14 to keep up with their more advanced opponents, according to freshman captain Alyssa Valverde and coach Kristi Mathisen.
However their hard work wasn’t enough, and the Cavs were defeated, 0-2.
“It was really good,” Mathisen said.
“All of the players on the other team, except one, play club. The other team ended up winning, but we shouldn’t have been able to score.”
Valverde said that despite most of the girls being new to the team, the team still worked together to pull through.
Freshman Anuradha Krishnan said the varsity team also expected to have a tough time playing the varsity Woodland Christian team, and she thought that the JV did better than the varsity for the first time ever. (The varsity lost the first set to Woodland, 6-25.)
“When the teams were switching benches (at the end of the first set) we heard the other coach yell at his team, ‘What in the world just happened?’ and I think that gave the girls a lot of hope,” Mathisen said.
“At 12-4, we got the ball back and got four or five points on serving alone.”
Valverde and Mathisen agreed that the girls’ teamwork and surprising score in the first set was the real victory.
The girls’ next tournament is Saturday, Sept. 17, at Jackson Sport Academy.
