At the Sacramento Food Bank & Family Services 2016 Run to Feed the Hungry Appreciation Dinner on Jan. 30, sophomore Luca Procida, SCDS team captain, received the award of top fundraiser of 29,000 contestants.

The SCDS team raised $11,435, placing second, with Procida having personally raised $2,634. Procida also received a plaque for being the top individual fundraiser.

Procida said the number of donations exceeded those from past years.

“What surprised me is that we had less team members than previous years, but their fundraising efforts helped us beat last year’s amount,” Procida said.

Approximately 150 people attended the dinner at Roxy Restaurant and Bar, according to Procida, and the atmosphere felt upbeat and full of excitement.

The Dreyer Babich Buccola Wood Campora law firm, which earned the top award for raising $17,755, requested that they share the trophy with SCDS and have both names engraved, Food Bank CEO Blake Young announced at the dinner.

Although Procida had been expecting to receive the individual award, he said the law firm sharing the trophy was a surprise.

The law firm wanted to acknowledge team SCDS’s commitment and their continual fundraising efforts over the years, Procida said.

The trophy will spend six months at each location and was presented on Feb. 10, at the lower school, middle school and high school morning meetings.

Procida began participating in Run to Feed the Hungry in middle school and said he usually starts fundraising after most of the team signs up, which is in late October or early November.
